Besides his blunder involving the prosecution, Nano’s statements yesterday also revealed an attempt to save the government by announcing changes that would not be substantial, but would affect only the lower ranks. At midday he had been pushing for replacements at every level; a few hours later, speaking to reporters, the prime minister suggested that most of his ministers might remain in power. Nano made himself even more ridiculous when he called for cooperation with the police and for creating opportunities for the police and lower-ranking officials, even though this was something that had been demanded by me and you two weeks earlier. Meanwhile, between the state and, ultimately, the crowds and protests, political imprisonment in Albania will continue. Yesterday we saw on television a frightened Fatos Nano, ready to release the innocent Democrats arrested on his orders; ready to accept the opposition’s criticisms and suggestions, after having killed, crushed and humiliated it; ready to fight smuggling, even though he and his clan have become millionaires in dollars from its dirty money; ready to cooperate in building a free country, even though only a few days ago he opened the doors of political prisons. But the opposition and all Albanians know that this is the prime minister’s distorted image, and that the protests have nothing to do with the Ilirs he intends to undertake, or with the changes Fatos Nano is trying to bring about through his latest moves. If he is asking for time until Monday, that does not mean Democrats and all free citizens should wait until then to see the dawn of change; it means that, for them, Fatos Nano must leave on his own by Monday. With this latest move, Prime Minister Nano sealed his culpability in the grave crisis into which the country has sunk and in the worsening political situation caused by the politically motivated imprisonment of six senior former Democratic Party officials. For all these reasons, he must leave as soon as possible, because he squandered his final chance long ago.
