Berisha continues meetings at the EUCD Congress. Broad support secured for the Democratic Party President of the European Parliament, Guil Robles: We are deeply concerned about developments in Albania. Important meetings held by Berisha and Demi with Kostantinesku, Kalderon, Wan Walzen, Welle, Kadam, Matlari and other representatives of sister parties. The night before last and yesterday, PD chairman Sali Berisha and Secretary for Foreign Relations Leonard Demi held a series of important meetings and talks with leaders of international institutions and heads of parties belonging to this international organization. The very packed schedule of the Albanian delegation included meetings with the President of the European Parliament, Guil Robles; the President of the Democratic International, Kalderon; the President of the European Christian Democratic Union, Ean Eanël; the Secretary General of the European Christian Democratic Union, Klaus Elle; and the Prime Minister of Malta, Fene Kadam. They also met with the chairwoman of the delegation of the Norwegian Democratic Party, Xhem Matlari, the head of the delegation of Romania’s Christian Democratic Party, representatives of the Bulgarian Democratic Union and the Democratic Party of Holland, as well as leaders of several other parties at this forum. In these talks, Berisha presented the difficult situation in Albania, the political killings and imprisonments, the exclusion of the opposition from the constitutional process, and the constitutional articles that destroy the identity and beliefs of Albanians. He focused in particular on the discrimination against human rights in the constitution, which allows detention before trial, restricts the right to property, and violates international conventions in Albania’s draft constitution. At these meetings, representatives of Europe’s largest parties denounced as unacceptable the articles concerning inequality before the law, restrictions on the right to exercise property rights, violations of Albanians’ rights, and the majority’s appropriation of the electoral commission. They strongly condemned the amendment of the referendum law before the referendum was held, regarded the imposition of the minority on the majority—as permitted by this law—as undemocratic, and denounced the political killings and imprisonment of the opposition as evidence of the neodictatorship being installed in Albania. They stated that this draft constitution does not meet democratic standards and isolates Albania from the world; that it permits violence and the free infringement of Albanians’ human rights, and blocks foreign investment in Albania. It makes Albanian citizens unequal before the law, enables discrimination on political grounds, as has happened in Albania, and lays the groundwork for the creation of cooperatives in agriculture and trade. The representatives of the Christian Democratic parties, with whom numerous meetings were held, insisted that the constitutional process in Albania be respected and conducted in a way that supports Albanian democracy, and said they would continue to closely follow developments in Albania. Last night, PD chairman Sali Berisha held an important meeting with the President of Romania, Kostantinesku, with whom he discussed recent developments in Albania. Berisha briefed the Romanian President on the oppression of the opposition and efforts to impose a communist neodictatorship in the country. Kostantinesku described the political situation in Albania as extremely troubling and expressed his steadfast support for the Democratic Party and Berisha. The failure of the government’s passport can no longer be rescued by any manipulation or trick by the governing coalition. The massive contempt shown by citizens throughout the country for the project presented has forced the entire Imam-Godo group to formulate an invitation to the opposition, with the sole aim of sparing them the shame they have prepared for the country and the Albanians. The mass abandonment by voters and their indifferent distancing from the government’s draft passport, a week before the vote, showed that not only will the project not be accepted by citizens, but they are rejecting it. No government in this country is interested in conflict, a lack of democracy, politically dependent courts, the legalization of the political mafia and corruption, the legalization of criminal gangs, national disintegration and economic misery—things that the government project embodies to the greatest degree. The insult to Albanian voters and their direct will in the voting process involving 1 million and 300 thousand voters, the mockery of them by describing the Referendum as merely a formal act because, according to Gjinushi and Imami, the constitution has already been approved, and the transformation of the referendum process into a political propaganda campaign against the opposition are just some of the features of the government’s campaign. Albanian taxpayers, despite living in misery and poverty and amid total economic hardship, cannot think of anything other than Gjinushi and his company spending millions of lekë on helicopter travel, dinners and lunches, and rewarding the gangs of fanatics with whom they fill empty halls, just so he can promote Fatos Nano’s passport. Albanian voters cannot help feeling insulted when, by a decision of Majko, their families have been excluded, their income and services have been stolen from them, and their brothers and sisters have been deprived of the fundamental democratic right to participate in the vote. Majko cannot help reminding them of the time of Enver Hoxha, who removed people from the civil registry and took away their voting family’s status simply because they opposed the dictatorship and had gone abroad. When Albanian voters see these thugs appointing and publishing lists in violation of all the rules, demanding that they be manipulated according to their tastes and wishes, and directing the constitution, while claiming they will change the constitution immediately after the vote even though they asked citizens to vote on a specific one, they see the rulers of this country treating them as slaves. The rulers of this country seem to regard them only as an alibi for claiming to be the government of the Albanians. They are seen as being on the same level as Albania’s communist rulers, who declare the political will of citizens invalid. Albanian voters have understood the situation and therefore have abandoned the government and its passport. The wisdom of Albanians, who refuse to be the prey of rulers, crime, corruption and corrupt practices, and refuse to be victims of the anti-Albanian and anti-democratic interests represented by the coalition government, is publicly demonstrating its rejection of Nano’s passport and its propagandists. The words and despair that have engulfed Majko’s government over the project’s failure are now well known; they can no longer contain it, not even through manipulation. Today, 63 days since the murder of the December Leader Every passing day since the murder of Azem Hajdari, the symbol of democracy and pluralism, proves the involvement of Fatos Nano’s government and its complicity in the crime that shook the entire Albanian world. The governments of the former communists, which leave the criminals who took the life of the December Leader free and unpunished, show Albanians that they have been and remain on the side of the killers, whose identities are known but who are protected by those in power. Democrats and all Albanians who loved and honored Azem Hajdari cannot tolerate the government’s complicity in this fact: the government must either capture the criminals and bring them to justice, or publicly declare that it was the one that carried out Azem Hajdari’s murder.
