The President of the Austrian Parliament, Fischer, meets with PD deputy chairman Pollo "We can never accept the violation of human rights in Albania!" Austria will support, as will the European Union, the return of democracy in Albania. This is what the President of the Austrian Parliament, Mr. Heinz Fischer, said yesterday during a meeting with the deputy chairman of the PD, Mr. Genc Pollo. In a press release from the public relations office of PDSH, distributed yesterday, it says that Mr. Fischer assessed the events of 14 September in Albania as dangerous and said that they are a warning bell for democracy. During the meeting, Mr. Pollo was informed of Austria’s readiness to support and help a swift solution to the crisis in Albania. ON PAGE 3

Power that abuses students

By Edi Paloka We are in the first days after a turning point that will go down in history as the beginning of the end for the rule of a clique that has lost its legitimacy to govern. The student movement is today a reality that is spreading and expanding throughout Albania, just as December '90 appeared, which brought other political forces onto the scene and likewise marked the fall of the communist regime. We have made it clear that the solution to Albania’s current political, economic, and social crisis cannot come without first resolving the crisis of power, and this is now clear to everyone. This student movement, whose map stretches from the South to the North, as can be seen on this page, which we dedicate to it, shows that Albanians have already risen up. From Shkodër to Vlorë, students and professors are demanding not only the fulfillment of their economic demands, but also the removal of the government. From the students and professors of the universities, who are now trying to join this movement, to ordinary people, the public has responded and is responding to the democrats’ call for the demonstration of 8 December, Youth Day. All together to put an end to the government of violence and poverty. No one can stop the hurricane of freedom. If the students of 1990-91 made possible the collapse of communism, the students of December 1998 will be the ones who will carry to final victory the hope for a free and democratic Albania. Arbnori: Parliament should be dissolved

The constitution approved with 200 and[?]dh[?] cannot be applied in a state, but only with a functioning government and free elections The chairman of the National Council of the PD, Pjetër Arbnori, expressed the view that implementing the constitution requires conditions that do not exist in Albania. Speaking to "Rilindja Demokratike", Mr. Arbnori said that for a constitution to be enforceable, it must function on the basis of free elections and democratic governance. "Since these conditions are lacking in Albania, the implementation of this constitution is impossible," said Mr. Arbnori, who sharply criticized the drafting process of the new constitution.
