The crisis is sinking; the ball is in the government's court

Today was normally the day the opposition would have announced the end of the hunger strike. Looking also at yesterday's statements by its leaders that many of the opposition's objectives are being achieved in this protest. Now the issue turns more into a major problem for the government to find a solution to this protest. The opposition is back to normal, ready to cooperate and find solutions with the government. Just a few days ago, senior figures of the SP and the government declared that the students on strike had found the solution to the problem, saying that the students' government was headed by Fatos Nano. After the clear statements from the opposition, today the students received a firm answer from Sali Berisha that the opposition has never intended to intervene and use the students' protest for its narrow aims. This took the sting out of the opponents, but placed the government and the state in a difficult position. Berisha stated that the students' demands are normal and legitimate. “The students are asking for the establishment of order and peace,” he said, adding that “the decisions taken through the constitutional acts of the PPSH and its officials can be stopped by nothing.” The opposition's clear statement that it is not the students' government and that it does not intend to use the protest for power has brought the government to its knees and placed it before its own responsibility. By thus avoiding the game of its opponents, the opposition has also removed from its own and the students' necks the alibi the government had been trumpeting. This has made both the SP and the government understand that now the only way out is to solve the problems raised by the students. All this shows that the ball has remained in the government's court, and it must meet the students' demands. ON PAGE 5

This was stated in the annual report by the organization's expert, Redom Husejn, of “Freedom House”. According to the report, even the journalistic organization “Media Instituti”, which serves as a monitoring group for the independent press, is considered a government-dependent organization. This is the first time that international experts have assessed the link between the state and the independent media in Albania. In yesterday's “Freedom House” report, Albania is ranked as the country with the lowest press freedom among 18 former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe, including the former Soviet Union countries. Albania has been described as a country “without freedom”, having fallen from the previous year's classification of “partly free”. ON PAGE 5

During the meeting, the leaders of the SP reportedly discussed this issue and saw it as part of the understanding that should exist between the sides, completely different from the language used up to now by the socialists. According to the interest of the leaders, the PD made it clear that its stance toward the government does not change, but the meeting was a necessary contact in the interest of the students' protest. Among other things, they demand that the process of selling the chrome extraction enterprises in the country not be delayed. According to the petition, the miners demand the privatization of the mines in the combine, their registration and the creation of conditions to ensure payment of arrears. The Albanian mines and their leaders must make the process transparent. According to trade union sources, the petition was sent with a special note to the Minister of Industry and Mines for the acceleration and reform of the privatization process. The document emphasizes that the privatization of the mines was requested long ago to ensure wages for the miners and to restore the pay that was due in metal to workers who are retiring. ON PAGE 5
