PATO[?]I - It is enough to enter Patos, even by an ordinary car, and you immediately feel in a city that is surrounded and occupied. Throughout the city, armed police patrol to the teeth, moving at dizzying speed in their heavy vehicles. From the very first moment you enter Patos, local residents and observers lead you to the same thought, the same conclusion. We are in a city under curfew. The fact is that the situation in Patos, several days after the bloody massacre in the city center, appears very tense. Law enforcement and police units are stationed there to control everything with an iron grip. This is reinforced by the frequent movements of armored and armed vehicles. Yesterday [??] were killed again in another bloody attack in the city center. And yet the security measures are greater than ever before. Meanwhile, people in the city are talking about police terror. It is enough to ask a few residents to learn that yesterday at midday the police tried to force their way into their homes and used violence against all citizens, mainly against young people. The police are looking for the perpetrators of the massacre and are using forceful methods which, according to locals, resemble terror. Under uninterrupted bursts of Kalashnikov fire, hundreds of police moved yesterday in search of the suspected persons. According to residents, these were mainly forces from the police stations of Fier, Patos and Roskovec, and special units brought in from Tirana, which were deployed yesterday morning. Citizens say that the police automatic weapons and the police dressed in black masks create a bad image for everyone. The newspaper found it very difficult to penetrate the blood-soaked area of Patos. On the streets and in the city center only police forces and a few civilians move around. They are also forced to stay inside their premises or homes. No one can even express a free opinion. The police appear very nervous, and this is reinforced by the sporadic gunfire that from time to time interrupts the terrible routine. Since [b]the early hours, horrific events have still been spoken of in the Fier morgue, where the masked body of 35-year-old Agron Pasha, one of the victims, has been taken. The first people who reached the scene were the 35-year-old’s friends, and it was precisely their relatives who brought to Patos, after lunchtime, the news that the body had been masked. According to them, in the morgue Agron Pasha’s body was in a black bag tied with rope, as is done only in the morgues of countries at war. Thus, in shocking form, the news reached Patos that to see the dead relative one had to travel more than an hour. Only there was the great [d]rama fully understood. Agron Pasha was the man who strongly opposed the arrival of the police in Patos. According to residents, this explains the extraordinary fury of the police forces toward his family and friends. Strong checkpoints are located at the entrance to the city.
According to the police, this is done for
security reasons. But residents see it as a state

“Rilindja Demokratike”
in its seventh anniversary year
Yesterday, seven years had just been completed since
the year [???] this opposition and
independent newspaper began its life. The date 5 January
of the year [1991?] marked the appearance of the first issue of the newspaper “Rilindja Demokratike”.
It was at a time when the monist regime was breathing its last and when the democratic movement
had just won the right to free speech and independent press. From its very
first issue, the newspaper “Rilindja
Demokratike” became a tribune of free speech,
the broadest forum of the Albanian opposition,
the true voice of democracy and freedom.
In the course of these seven years it
remained such, despite all the difficulties and blows it has suffered. During these
years it survived amid many vicissitudes,
but it never stopped defending the truth, democracy and freedom. At
the end of ’97, it once again came out in defense
of freedom and democracy in Albania,
despite the attacks, violence and destruction inflicted on its newsroom. It
remains so, despite the power of the state
and the repression exercised against it.
Today, “Rilindja Demokratike” celebrates its [7]th anniversary and promises its readers
that, whatever happens to it,
it will continue to be independent,
democratic and a tribune of truth.
