Nano is not consistent in policy toward Kosovo The television debate of last night aired on two consecutive evenings the national issue, cast the first two rays that replace the harshness of the exchange of statements and politi- cal denunciations of a two-month period. Nano felt the need to address Albanians through the TVSH cameras, perhaps startled by the opening of a painful exhibition for him. After they gave him the chance to present his version of Kosovo, the opposition with which he exchanged accusations during last week, challenged him before the viewers in a parliamentary duel of arguments. And here also stands out one advantage of the superiority of such an opposition over a government that, beyond its mandate, has nothing more to continue governing with, but is instead handing the country over to a corrupt clique and one incapable of facing the serious challenges of such a traumatized society as ours. The rippling waves of state television were utterly unequal for laying out the modern worldview of the prime minister that the solution for Kosovo is timely and of the moment. Such was also the mentality on secondary issues, that proximity to Washington and Brussels passes only through Belgrade. This is the greatest wonder. If there is evidence that Moscow and Belgrade and all the anti-Albanian poles of influence in European politics are today striving to diminish the Kosovo issue, how can it happen that the Albanian government plays the same game in a half-voiced way? There is no other explanation. No Albanian government of any color whatsoever can have another foreign-policy priority except the affirmation of the right of the Kosovo Albanians to self-determination. To this condition are subordinated all other differences and calculations in relations with foreign partners. The more conceivable this is for them, the stronger Tirana’s voice becomes in the chanceries of the world. The defense and proclamation of the legitimate rights of Albanians are neither a nationalist adventure nor a destabilizing provocation. On the contrary, they constitute the only condition for a climate of peace and long-term cooperation in the Balkans. These truths the Nano government must understand as soon as possible, otherwise it will remain alone on its aimless path toward Kosovo. ON PAGE 2
