The President has now decided to join the chorus of accusations against the judicial system and to begin its destruction. His call for “deep reforms” in the justice system and the declaration of an alarm over decisions made by certain courts clearly point to the approach of a new wave of political pressure against a power that until yesterday was held in the embrace of the socialists. Yesterday’s speech by Rexhep Meidani at the KLD meeting is identical to the texts drafted at the PS headquarters and to the endless reproaches that government leaders have addressed for months to the Albanian judiciary.
Since coming to power, the government and Prime Minister Nano have turned the judiciary into a shooting target, accusing it at times of incompetence, at times of corruption, and at times of ties to the opposition. Yet the truth is that the judicial system is now paying the price for refusing to become a political tool of the majority. Decisions that the government does not like are declared scandalous, judges are publicly attacked, while the president of the republic sides with the pressure instead of defending the constitutional independence of the courts.
