A difficult time for the intelligentsia

By Bardhyl LONDO The attitude of colleagues toward this state must be firm, persistent and just. We must not be fooled by the statements or occasional oaths of the current rulers. Their state, the socialist state, is such: anti-intellectual, anti-democratic. It cannot change. It pretends to have relented and lowered its head, but it is the same one. More savage, more vengeful. More arrogant. More ridiculous. Because it has lost the face of the state and now seeks to replace it with the face of a swindler. There are no more masks. And that is the heaviest thing about these days. However delicate the climate may seem, however calm the surface, there is a silent cruelty toward the intelligentsia and free thought. This cruelty appears through exclusion, insults, belittlement, isolation. And not only that. It also appears in the effort to discredit every independent voice, to present it as superfluous, harmful, unnecessary for society. It is a difficult time for the Albanian intelligentsia. Not only because of material poverty, but also because of the moral poverty surrounding it. In place of respect for knowledge, we have the rise of mediocrity. In place of merit, we have servility. In place of civic spirit, we have the triumph of political brutality. The intelligentsia must not remain silent. Its silence would be acceptance. It must speak, react, defend values, defend the citizen, defend the future. ON PAGE 3
