Nano, the PS's backslidden jacket
The Socialist Party is once again shaking and destabilizing its own government and plunging it into a regime crisis. At yesterday’s leadership meeting, at the center of the criticism were Prime Minister Fatos Nano and his government cabinet. The crisis deepened after the harsh verbal clash between Interior Minister Neritan Ceka and Prime Minister Nano. The latter tried to shift responsibility for the government’s failure onto his allies and unidentified circles within the General Staff. But the prime minister’s fierce criticism of Ceka led the latter to leave the meeting and set in motion the game of resignations and cabinet changes. Nano accused the ministers of public order and defense, as well as the minister of culture, of attempting to destabilize the country, implying that behind them stood allied parties of the left-wing coalition, namely PAD, AAK and PSD. Speaking in the coded language of politics, Nano implied that “various irresponsible circles” inside and outside the coalition are trying to portray the government and the PS as incapable of coping with the severe economic and public-order situation. In his view, “political destabilization” would triumph if the country were led by “unbalanced” and irresponsible people. Nano made these accusations at a time when dark killings are continuing in the capital and in the mountain areas of the country, especially in the north, the armed revolt organized against the state, which is growing stronger day by day, is spreading across an ever wider territory. The deadlock and incapacity of the government, which stemmed from the disastrous anti-national policy, are creating a dramatic situation for Albania. Nevertheless, Nano apparently seeks to use the crises caused by him as an argument to strengthen his own position in the PS, which he justifies by the “failure to fulfill obligations” by the ministers of his cabinet. In the early hours of the morning, after meeting with Nano, Defense Minister Sabit Brokaj ended the speculation by telling the press that he was seeking a “vote of no confidence” in the PS leadership if it “continues to take a negative stance against the socialist government.” Then, avoiding journalists’ questions, Brokaj left in a hurry. Interior Minister Neritan Ceka, an ally of the socialist government, also found Nano’s stance troubling. Sources from the meeting said that Minister Ceka, beyond the prime minister’s harsh criticism, raised doubts that the destabilization of the situation in the country could be used to drag out the early local elections. This statement was made after Nano said during the meeting that he himself and some of his allies had been threatened with death. The sources said the conversation took this turn after Ceka asked what would happen if the prime minister were killed. At that moment Nano asked: “Do you understand what responsibility you are taking upon yourself?” The harsh debate between them is said to have continued at other intervals as well. Later, Ceka’s departure from the hall implied his resignation from the government cabinet. PSD President Skënder Gjinushi also emerged troubled from the meeting with Nano in the early hours of the morning. It is said that Nano asked him not to let the ministers targeted by him, State Minister Musa Ulqini and Minister of Labor Kastriot Islami, leave their posts. About two hours after midnight, after the meeting with Nano, when the prime minister was asked by “RD” whether there had been resignations from the government, he said that “there may be.”

Faced with the new developments, the Albanian opposition, led by the Democratic Party, held its meeting yesterday with its allies. At the center of this meeting were the opposition’s reactions to the new crisis gripping the country. Former President Berisha, known as the de facto leader of the Albanian opposition, during his speech in the leadership of the Democratic Party declared that “the current crisis is very serious. Nano is a backslidden jacket and his government failed the country.” Berisha stressed that the Albanian opposition is in favor of a technical government that would be able to restore order, fight corruption and create conditions for elections. In his view, “the country’s prime minister has lost all moral and political authority.” In this context, the opposition expressed its opposition to the use of weapons and violence as a political solution.
