For Kosovo, dialogue with the international community

Berisha meets with Montenegrin minister Dinosha The chairman of the PDSH, Prof. Dr. Sali Berisha, received in a meeting the Foreign Minister of Montenegro, M. Branko Peroviç, with whom he held a discussion about developments in Kosovo. At this meeting, Berisha and Peroviç addressed the situation in Kosovo, assessing that the violence carried out against the Albanians of Kosovo by the Serbian police, incited by Belgrade, poses a risk to peace and security in the region. Berisha and Peroviç assessed that in the face of this situation the international community must engage more strongly in favor of dialogue as the only way to a just solution of the Kosovo issue. Mr. Berisha declared that "The independence of Kosovo is in the best interest of peace, stability and development of the region". At this meeting it was also assessed that the dramatic developments in Kosovo after the Serbian offensive against the civilian population in the area of Deçan, Gjakovë, etc., and the Serbian massacre in the courtyard of the LDK in the village of Ratishë and the burning of the houses and property of Albanians, require a stronger and more effective response from the international community. Mr. Branko Peroviç said that the government of Montenegro supports the path of dialogue and that this dialogue can be successfully achieved with the help of the international presence and that Albanians must be united in order to realize their goals.

Right-wing, or "pink" opposition?

By Bardhyl LONDO The spirit and energy that the right-wing opposition is living through in Albania has now gained a new dimension. The syndrome of despotism and distortions of the Albanian state, closely tied to its adversary, the socialist state, has undergone a qualitative change that has been welcomed by an opposition not only because the old cards of the game are moving rapidly. The socialists have understood this better than anyone, despite hiding it in the huge shell of entirely European standards. This opposition now has the moral majority and is drawing its small allies of the socialist despot from one side and, from the other, figures and personalities who do not feel at ease under his shadow. This new factor has made the Albanian opposition, or at least the right wing, stronger, more liberal, and clearer in its European orientation. It is now becoming clear that the right wing, at least as an orientation, can no longer be represented by a pink opposition, which barely manages to keep its political face under the shadow of socialist power. Its existence as an opposition now represents one side in an artificial duel between the left and a pseudo-right that is right-wing only in name. It is becoming increasingly clear that not everything old in the Albanian opposition can be called right-wing. Moreover, it is becoming clear that some models now proven successful, both in Albania and in Kosovo, have determined what is real opposition and what is a satellite of power. To be right-wing means to defend freedom, property, pluralism and Western orientation; not to remain trapped in a political equivocation fed by servility toward power. If there is a lesson from recent developments, it is that real opposition is won in the streets, in the cities, in meetings with people and in popular support, not in salon bargains. For this reason, any attempt to relativize the boundaries between the right wing and a pink opposition is destined to fail. The Albanian citizen is increasingly seeing the difference.
