The Albanian government distributes compromising material at the meeting of the North Atlantic Parliamentary Assembly. Nano continues to muddle the Kosovo issue

At the meeting of the North Atlantic Parliamentary Assembly held a few days ago in Lisbon, Socialist Party deputy Leontiev Çuçi distributed a document that compromises the Albanian government’s position on resolving the Kosovo issue. This document clearly sets out the Tirana government’s option for Kosovo’s future status. The penultimate paragraphs of the document say, more or less, that “maximalist positions must be abandoned and agreement reached on an acceptable point, which for us is the status of a Republic within the FRY, without the right to sece[p?]…”. Ultimately, official Tirana has aligned its position with that of the people of Kosovo while distancing itself from them on a fundamental point: what they aspire to, an independent Republic. Such a declaration in an important institution such as the North Atlantic Parliamentary Assembly places Nano’s government in a neutral position on the issue of Albanians in Kosovo, as if it were a matter concerning other countries with a different nationality. The Albanian document distributed to the meeting’s participants by Çuçi is not just a piece of news. In this case, it shows that he dared to do so, since his statement was prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and delivered to Çuçi by hand at the office of Foreign Minister Paskal Milo’s cabinet, just as he was boarding the plane at Rinas. In fact, Çuçi did not even manage to read it himself; he distributed it as a prepared document. The reason he did not dare to read it was the presence at the meeting of an LDK delegation, which, in its conclusions, did not support the choice of a Republic within the framework of the FRY as a solution that had already been tried but was ineffective. The head of this delegation, Edita Tahiri, insisted strongly on this point, which led to Çuçi’s withdrawal from the discussion. Nevertheless, he carried the Albanian government’s message through to the end, ensuring that it was distributed to every participant in the meeting. Çuçi, his party, and Çuçi’s government want Albanians not to demand their right to be independent—a demand Albanian government officials call maximalist—but instead to declare themselves in favor of eternal subjugation under Yugoslavia, a country with which they have nothing in common except eighty years of enslavement. The Tirana government’s position astonished the Assembly meeting’s participants, all the more so because they had clearly understood the Albanians’ demand for independence. Creditors’ protest outside “Fiera del Levante” A group of outraged creditors were mistreated by police after they tried to enter the opening ceremony of the “Fiera del Levante” fair, held yesterday afternoon at the Palace of Congresses. The incident took place at around 18:00, while Prime Minister Nano was speaking about the fair’s success before several hundred attendees. The women shouted against the Nano government and demanded to be allowed to take their protest into the Palace of Congresses, where the prime minister was also present. Thus, the incident took place in front of the Palace of Congresses, in front of the Presidency. Witnesses at the scene said the police were extremely harsh with the protesting women, dispersing them in a very short time after using force. The blows from the rubber batons and the kicks of the police officers, who had formed a cordon around the Palace of Congresses, forced the women to leave immediately. The incident was quickly brought to an end thanks to the use of force and the police’s determination to use violence against the women who were resolved to protest. 102 days since the former Interior Minister was imprisoned The former Interior Minister in the Government of National Reconciliation, Ali Kazazi, continues to be held in prison on charges of [g?s?]… He was detained on 14 February 1998 at the Uren e Mllotit, following the police operation at the home of the Director, Azem Hajdari, as part of the current state’s effort to incriminate the opposition. On 17 February, he was placed under indefinite arrest. Kazazi comes from a family with well-known anti-communist traditions and is a member of the PD’s National Council.
