This picture resembles a reactivation of the ideological mechanisms that Albanians thought had been left behind. Instead of normal institutional communication, a constant visual pressure is imposed on the citizen. In this way the city loses its neutrality and becomes a one-sided tribune. Whether this is only a consequence of the chaos of recent days or part of a broader scenario remains to be seen. But today’s appearance of Tirana is very much like an ideological barracks, where the symbol takes the place of reason. By Sami NELA
