Albanians cannot be sidelined

By: Shkemi Peposhi Over the past two days, the loud noise has multiplied speculation to the detriment of the just cause of the Albanian people of Kosovo and of NATO's role in its liberation. It has focused on the increased attacks on civilians, on the loss of the "Stealth" aircraft, and on the losses of the American "Apache" helicopters, especially in Albanian circles where the left and its electorate, infected by it, oppose NATO's intervention in Albania and its role in the ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. Indeed, the idea has even arisen that NATO has reached a critical stage and that the West that inflicted so much on the Serbs for 7-8 days with aircraft is coming to an end. But NATO's air strikes have entered their ninth week. They are intensifying. On Saturday, the most powerful movements of NATO aircraft were observed at all military bases in Italy and in Albania. There is also a great deal of movement across on the Italian coast. On one of the runways in Bari, six black bombers with unusual shapes were stationed during the day on Saturday. They looked like aircraft that take off only at night. They are called B-2s. Such aircraft took part in NATO's first bombings in Yugoslavia. One returned on Friday to an American base with an electrical fault and, after being repaired, immediately returned to Italy. Among NATO officers in Italy, the conviction prevails that this operation will continue until victory. In all the latest interviews and contacts with Western officers, the impression is created that NATO has not abandoned its goal of forcing Milošević to accept the Western peace terms for Kosovo. Last night, all Western television networks were circulating reports that B-52 bombers had taken off from their bases in Great Britain heading toward Yugoslavia. Another 8-10 F-14Ds are also being prepared on the Nimitz. These signs and many others circulating in NATO's political and military circles create the impression that not only bombings but also ground attacks are ripe. The failure of the peace talks with Milošević and the escalation of ethnic cleansing in Kosovo have brought about this moment. Meanwhile, the propaganda of anti-Western circles continues to circulate in Albanian circles. Albanian politicians who have repeatedly spoken out against NATO's intervention in Kosovo and against hosting its troops in Albania are now speaking as if NATO is failing. These voices are well known. They are the same pro-Russian lobby that yesterday called on the Albanian government not to allow NATO planes to cross Albanian airspace. They are the same people who tried to fuel anti-Western hysteria after the downing of the American "Stealth" aircraft and after the incidents with the "Apache" helicopters. Albanians cannot be avoided in this debate. In this case, avoidance means agreement with Serbian propaganda and with those who want to undermine the alliance with the West. NATO's war is the war of the Albanian people of Kosovo for freedom. ON PAGE 6
