Official Tirana rejects the American suggestion
From the note
The letter of Kastriot Islami that the newspaper published in full yesterday was called by diplomat Christopher Hill himself proof of his inflamed and shallow thinking. The reaction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to this letter is a lesson even for Mr. Hill. Albania’s diplomatic institution reminded the American envoy that Albanians do not accept anyone’s suggestions for compromise at the expense of Kosovo’s freedom. The Foreign Ministry made clear that it is determined against solutions that violate Kosovo’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. In essence, its reply overturns the idea of turning Kosovo into a truncated protectorate.
Meanwhile, Kastriot Islami’s letter shows not only a lack of political responsibility, but also an approach contrary to national aspirations. It gives the Serbs the right to seek concessions from Albanians precisely when the democratic world is intervening militarily against ethnic cleansing. Instead of strongly defending Kosovo’s liberation, Islami suggests pale and unclear formulas that only confuse public opinion.
In this climate of war, every political ambiguity carries multiplied weight. Therefore the reaction of official Tirana is important: it reaffirms that Albania cannot accept temporary solutions that legalize Serbian occupation. Every proposal must start from the right of Kosovo’s people to self-determination and from the necessity of the departure of Serbian forces.
If some politicians continue to speak the language of false compromises, the Albanian state’s official stance is a clear signal that the Kosovo issue is not negotiated on the basis of half-measures.
