The Russians, another bogeyman in Kosovo

By Sami Neza Aleksei NATO leaves the Russian elite a step to decide the whole South. But could this have been a matter that had gone back into play through an agreement? New questions are arising around the movement of Russian troops in Kosovo, and one wonders whether some specific plan had not been prepared in advance. If Russian special forces were able to take the first position at Pristina airport and hold this fortified position, what would the rest of these forces have relied on? Thus the first questions arose. The head of the Russian general staff, Anatoly Kvashnin, told the “Interfax” agency that Russia would deploy two brigades in Kosovo with around 10,000 troops. But Russian foreign minister Ivanov lowered the figure to 3,600 troops. Then Yeltsin came onto the scene. He said the Russians would not add any other forces beyond the 2,000-strong peacekeeping contingent in Bosnia. How would they get to Kosovo? Kosovo lies in the center of the peninsula and, if Russian forces were to enter there by plane, that would require permission from Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. These countries belong to NATO or are on the verge of joining. Therefore the possibility is small. A second route would be by land, through Serbia. This brings us to the second line of inquiry: was there Serb-Russian cooperation for the entry of Russian troops? That is what is being said more and more. The Yugoslav army headquarters denied knowing anything about the Russians’ entry into Kosovo, but despite that it is hard to believe the Serbian army played no role at all. Russian media gave the version that Russian troops set out from Bosnia and arrived in Kosovo during the night. Serbian forces were still in the process of withdrawing. This move altered the balance created after the peace agreement and provoked strong reactions in NATO and in Western capitals. Russia is seeking to secure political and military influence in Kosovo and to present itself as an unavoidable factor in resolving the crisis.
