Russia, the Serbian version of Sarajevo

If the bombardments were to end and the Russian Foreign Minister, Igor Ivanov, were to take a seat on the bench of comments at The Hague War Crimes Tribunal, he could be asked why he did nothing to stop the killings and rapes being carried out in Kosovo. Instead, Russian officials are doing everything they can to justify and defend the Belgrade regime. Their accusations against NATO, the U.S., and the West are a cynical inversion of the truth. If the Serbs committed ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, according to them, it must have happened because of the bombings. If the refugees were expelled, that would be a consequence of the alliance’s actions. If hundreds of thousands of Albanians have been driven from their homes, the real culprits would be those who intervened to protect them.
This is old Soviet propaganda dressed in the new costume of Russian diplomacy. Through this language, Moscow seeks to relativize Serbian guilt and turn the victim into the culprit. Even today, when the evidence of atrocities is abundant, when the testimony of survivors and the footage show the truth, Russia’s official voice repeats the Serbian version of Sarajevo: that the victims are fabricated, that the aggressor has been provoked, that the world must remain silent.
In this sense, the Russian stance is not merely political support for Milošević, but moral co-responsibility. By denying the crime, it eases it. By attacking international intervention, it gives the executioner time. And by using the language of Serbian victimhood, it seeks to cover Albanian blood with the fog of diplomatic cynicism.

Today, 3/4 days from the killing of the Opposition Leader

Today, 26 days will have passed since the killing of Azem Hajdari. Albanians still cannot understand the official silence and the lack of punishment for the perpetrators. The killing of the opposition leader shocked the entire country and created the conviction that powerful political interests stand behind the crime. However, the government has not only failed to provide transparency, but seems to be protecting the perpetrators by obstructing a full investigation.
This conduct by those in power has raised serious suspicions that the executors and the masterminds of the attack enjoy support from above. Instead of uncovering the truth, public opinion is facing silence, evasions, and excuses. For this reason, many citizens consider the government politically and morally responsible for the lack of justice.
The publication today of a list with the names of the deputies who were at the scene, and the lack of action against them, makes the climate of mistrust even heavier. Faced with this situation, the demand for justice and transparency remains a duty to the memory of Azem Hajdari.
