Smuggling, the issue on which Socialist rivals remain silent

editorial By Sami NEZA Corruption and smuggling are two of the gravest scourges of Socialist governance, yet they are the two words most conspicuously absent from the vocabulary of the candidates for leader of the Socialist Party. Neither the current Prime Minister, Pandeli Majko, nor former Prime Minister Fatos Nano has included even a paragraph in their platforms setting out how they would focus their campaign for party leadership on fighting corruption and smuggling. A brief look at the Socialist Party's electoral debate shows that it has no connection whatsoever with the future of this party, much less with improved governance by the governing coalition. on page 4

The government protects Azem's killers

Today, 374 days since the murder of the December Leader Every day that passes since the murder of Azem Hajdari, the symbol of democracy and pluralism, provides proof of the involvement of Fatos Nano's government and its successor in the crime that shook the entire Albanian world. The government of the former Communists, who are free and untroubled, protects the criminals who took the life of the December Leader, showing Albanians that their hands were and remain stained with blood, yet those in power leave them untouched. Democrats and all Albanians who loved and honored Azem Hajdari cannot tolerate or overlook these facts. The government must either capture the criminals and bring them to justice, or publicly declare that it itself carried out the murder of Azem Hajdari.
