A hunger strike, as the most extreme form of protest, touches everyone’s souls and minds. All the more so when it is carried out by individuals who claim to live in a pluralist and democratic society. Such a strike, in the cells of Tirana’s Prison 313, has been painfully endured for eight days. The chairman of the Legality Movement Party, a senior officer, artists, teenagers and two good men from Kosovo are martyrs; for eight days they have been confined to wooden beds. Likewise, many others who cannot stomach the humiliation of prison while their companions are suffering for the same democratic ideal have shown solidarity with them by apparently joining the strike.

Every day that passes since the murder of Azem Hajdari, the symbol of democracy and pluralism, proves the involvement of Fatos Nano’s government and his successor in the crime that shook the entire Albanian world. The government of the former communists, which leaves free and unpunished the criminals who took the life of the December Leader, shows Albanians that they have been and remain on the side of the murderers, who have names and surnames, but are not opposed by those in power. Democrats and all Albanians who loved and valued Azem Hajdari cannot tolerate this fact under any circumstances. The government must either capture the criminals and bring them to justice, or publicly declare that it itself committed the murder of Azem Hajdari.
