Today, 605 days since Azem’s murder Every day that passes since the murder of Azem Hajdari, the symbol of democracy and pluralism, is a day that exposes the governments of Fatos Nano and his successor in the crime that shook the entire Albanian world. The governments of the former communists, which leave free and unpunished the criminals who took the life of the December Leader, show Albanians that they are on the side of the killers, who have names and surnames but are not touched by those in power. Democracy and all the Albanians who loved and built Azem Hajdari cannot tolerate this guilt under any circumstances. The government must either arrest the criminals and bring them to justice, or publicly declare that it itself committed the murder of Azem Hajdari.

By decision of the Defense Council, the state treasury, together with the State Bank, has been entrusted to the Ministry of the Interior for safekeeping, along with its inventory. Under these circumstances, we have a duty to inform you of the following: The monetary assets “Çeliku” are currently stored and secured at the facility called “Lumi,” near the Krraba mine. As elsewhere in the country, on March 13–14, 1997, the facility in question was attacked by local bandits, who damaged and put out of operation the facility’s equipment as well as its guard post. According to the information received, the facility was attacked not only with the aim of stealing weapons and other materials, but also with the aim of stealing the assets known as “Çeliku”; this information makes clear that the facility’s purpose—safeguarding the treasury’s assets—had been revealed. After the above-mentioned incident, individuals whom we believe had coordinated their knowledge of the location of the assets attempted to enter the facility’s treasury, creating the conditions for explosives to be placed with the aim of making breaches and entering directly into the tunnel where the “Çeliku” assets are stored. Despite what is stated above, we emphasize that the “Çeliku” assets remain untouched, since the facility’s doors and entrances are highly secure both against physical attacks and in terms of the secrecy of how they are opened.
