Meanwhile, since that time, 423 people, all Albanians, have drowned in the Otranto Channel. This count does not include the poor Kurds or Chinese who have lost their lives in the waters of the Adriatic, in some cases deliberately drowned. Over these three years, there have been 98 violent street robberies, in most cases by masked bandits who have never been caught by the police. Likewise, there have been 174 cases of exorbitant protection payments being imposed on major merchants by the gangs that remain active. This is a tragic tally that needs no comment.
