Albanian-Americans debate Ambassador Limpreht over the October 1 elections By Beqir SINA New York The U.S. Ambassador to Albania, Jozef Limpreht, was invited two days ago to a meeting with the Albanian-American community in New York. The National Albanian-American Council and the council’s Executive Director, Ilir Zherkaj, organized the meeting, attended by Albanians who had emigrated to the United States during every period. The discussion focused mainly on the situation in Albania, the October 1 local elections, and the post-election situation. In general, the meeting took the form of a debate, with questions and answers between the participants and the guest, Ambassador Limpreht. There were also rebuttals and comments from those present, who in many cases disagreed with the ambassador’s answers or challenged the facts and arguments behind the analysis the ambassador himself had offered at the beginning of the meeting. Those present expressed reservations about the U.S. ambassador in Tirana’s position on the electoral process held in Albania, and in some cases debates took place between the ambassador himself and victims of this process who are currently in the United States. continued on page 9
