ALBANIA - A disturbing pattern of disregard for human rights
Mass arrests have continued over the past week, with Albanian police on several occasions reportedly using excessive force against peaceful demonstrations and other opposition supporters. Of particular concern are reports that police officers are ill-treating detainees, including some held incommunicado. Although there have been some improvements in the detainees’ treatment in the past, there are now serious concerns regarding the treatment of members of the opposition political party during their arrest and detention. Amnesty International urges the Albanian authorities to ensure that all detained persons are protected from torture or ill-treatment and that allegations of such treatment are promptly, thoroughly and impartially investigated.
