Banalized hypocrisy
Editorial
BY AFRIM KRASNIQI Banalized hypocrisy Leka Zogu has passed away. An Albanian with a tragic fate, just like his father, just like the Albanian monarchy, just like Albania itself. A life of ups and downs, a gray walk in a struggle for survival with great dignity, followed by loyal supporters and attacked by many opponents. Today (after death) we hear only good things said about Leka Zogu, only praise, even endless praise, the monarchy of his father is evoked and everything they represent. An obsession with obituaries and a ritual of hypocrisy that is repeated everywhere, in the family, in society, in politics, in the media and in the state. While they are alive, we do not want them, do not respect them, do not value them and even denigrate them, but when they die we “discover” that they are good, that we love and value them very much. We prevented Ahmet Zogu from returning to the homeland, officially declared him a traitor, blew up his mother’s grave, we ourselves expelled Leka from Albania in 1993 (Berisha) and 1997 (Nano), and today, when he is no longer alive, we hold governments, weave endless praise and, in their honor, even move the bust of Skanderbeg, the national hero. The same ritual happens every time political and public figures pass away. While alive, A. Hajdari, P. Arbnori or A. Spahia were anathematized, denigrated and isolated from political decision-making, but after their passing those who did not love them while they were alive suddenly discover great love, weave praise and fill television screens with crocodile tears or fabricated memories. While alive, don. Jubani or Father Pllumi, the poets T. Keko or F. Reshpja, were anathematized, we did not want them, the gates of the state were closed to them, but when they passed away we rushed to place them on a pedestal. The list is long, the behavior is always the same. Often it even happens that the same individuals who darkened someone’s life while they were alive compete, when they die, to take the place of the most grief-stricken friend. A marked lack of sincerity, a banalized hypocrisy, a formal and politically ungrateful behavior that manifests itself and is conveyed only in obituaries, only after death, a practice of behavior and thought that best demonstrates the identity crisis of a pre-democratic society and a provincial political class.
