When even humanism becomes governmental

Editorial BY ARBEN RROZHANI When even humanism becomes governmental Two chilling appeals for help made yesterday in the “Shqiptarja.com” newsroom would break anyone’s heart. A 64-year-old man from a remote village in Puka says he no longer has even flour for his 9-month-old baby. Another, the mayor of Shishtavec, says food reserves are running out. Dozens of television reports speak of thousands of residents threatened by isolation, lack of food reserves, power cuts and no assistance from state bodies. The government is, as always, insensitive to such natural disasters. Last year, when Shkodër was flooded, in order to sell energy Sali Berisha played the astronomer, talking about lunar movements that occur once in 100 years. Now he speaks of unprecedented winters. That is all he says and then leaves for Azerbaijan, in the company of Albanian and foreign traffickers, in a country with which we have only 98 thousand dollars, perhaps arms exports, which were sold to kill people. Businessmen who have made millions thanks to the corrupt government do the same. For example Rezart Taçi, who after squandering millions on football teams, while not paying the money for Albpetrol, now promises money for the victims of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Fine, it may be a tactic, after all it is the oil money he brings to Albania, to sell it to us 10 lek cheaper than his rivals. But announcements like the one Taçi himself spreads in the media, that he is on a working visit to the troubled region of Nagorno-Karabakh, distort people’s perception. What do Azerbaijanis and old weapons have to do with it! Where did we find them? And why did we find them precisely here, when a few hundred kilometers away we have a people crying out and appealing that they are dying of hunger, there among the mountains and the snow, abandoned by the government, but also by businessmen who have become one with the government and behave like it.
