Comment BY MATILDA TROKA With great hope and no destination While following, as every day, the press in Albania, I was also able to read the interview with Prof. Shenasi Rama, as well as the reactions to the first Albanian separation. I fully agree with the description Rama gives of the political situation in our country, but it seems superficial to me, because the metastases of the tumor that has seized Albania are much, much deeper and denser, since they have gone so far as to destroy the very morality of society. Today, Albanians do not care that they are lacking vital conditions, such as electricity, water, bread, and in many cases even breath. Today, Albanians are morally stripped, they have no motive to carry on and even less do they have a shred of vision for their tomorrow. In fact, I want to support the professor when he says that the blame lies with the elite. I think that in Albania today only that category lives, namely the elite. It has sufficient income, it has the possibility of living, it has hope, it has the essentials and much, much more for life; in other words, it has everything. Whereas the ordinary people, the population, the voter, the simple Albanian — can they tell me what they have? Nothing more than the desire to have at least peace, to dream of a hope for the near tomorrow and gradually for the distant tomorrow. Today, the Albanian is simply a number that fills voter lists, remains civil with many problems still, population registration lists undertaken by all sorts of people, today the Albanian is a breathless object, because they have occupied it... ► continues on page 2
