BY ANILA BASHA Ristani makes a mess again The situation has become legally unclear in Albania (as with everything else, in fact) regarding the mandate of a PS deputy that must be granted by the Parliament of Albania. But the prime minister, of course with a large staff of legal advisers (indeed, it must be said, perhaps more expert than the Socialists) has turned this issue into the latest debate in Albanian politics. So, I went straight to the prime minister’s office. Me – Hello Doctor. Him – Yes, Anila. What issue do you media people have this time? Me – If only everyone were without troubles, Mr. Prime Minister, perhaps we would be among the first group of countries in the list of the civilized world. But that is not the case. Here there is an uproar over a parade of the LGBT community; elsewhere, we focus on crime issues, when it turns out that a madman was moving from bank to bank and at every betting shop, threatening and killing people; then again, we stop at the government’s high-profile privatizations, and most recently at the big debate over Albtelekom; and even further, at the pocket that hurts us all when the price of fuel rises and there is no brake on it. Not to mention the rest, at local government level, it would not be surprising if in a few days the Mayor of Tirana, Lulzim... Spending time on these domestic debates over the safe PS mandate means forgetting many other issues that are far more urgent for us to discuss ► continued on page 9
