BY AGRON ALIBALI The haste of a female ambassador During a visit to Nuremberg on April 1, 2012, the Ambassador of Albania to Germany, Valter Ibrahimi, commented on the late-March rejection by the German Bundestag of the motion for an official apology concerning the genocide committed against the indigenous Herero and Nama populations in the former German colony of South-West Africa, today Namibia, between 1904 and 1908. “For me, quoted as having said Ambassador Ibrahimi, the concern is the nationalist tones that recall the past of racist and colonialist culture in Africa, which was characterized by harsh conflicts, leading even to the extreme manifestations of racism during the Holocaust in Europe...” It is not known whether the nearly similar statement of April 4, 2012 in Korçë by the Ambassador of Germany to Albania, Carola Mueller-Holtkemper, is a counter-response to Ambassador Ibrahimi’s comments in Nuremberg. As one of the world’s largest and most dynamic economies, today’s Germany is the engine of the United Europe, as well as an example of a developed state that pursues a foreign policy based on peace and human rights, while domestically linking economic development with environmental protection and the pursuit of advanced social policies.
