The name of the “gold” is Sultan
Editorial
BY ARBEN RROZHANI The name of the “gold” is Sultan In Albania, the juggler artist has been, remains, and will be, until they let him go, only one man: Sali Berisha. As he also showed two days ago in Parliament, no matter how you knock him down, he gets back on his feet. By staying in power. By holding on to a fragile majority, but one that keeps him at the head of the country. A former friend of his, later declared an enemy like one of the many the 67-year-old doctor has declared, has recently found the name of the act: “Sultan”. It has nothing to do with the neo-Ottomanism he proclaims to his Turkish counterpart in Ankara, nor with the blood spilled at Albanian gatherings. Turkey can take the blame away from him, because he is a Sultan, even if a small one in this corner of the former Ottoman Empire. By ruling over everything, by placing all the fortresses under his yoke, by buying “pashas” who have a vote or two, by rewarding spahis with favors or state posts. Taking over the High Council of Justice was the next fortress, and he succeeded, even threatening the opposition in front of the whole world that he would crush it right there in the square if it came out again like on 21 January. Because today he is the brave man with many companions: He has seized governance from the center down to the base, the material benefits. Private property is turned around according to his own interests. He has taken the Constitutional Court under his control, which now votes in favor of every decision he makes, the Supreme Court that overturns every accusation against him and his people, and the Court of Appeal as well. He has intimidated the Prosecutor’s Office, turned the Supreme State Audit into a government audit agency. Parliament, likewise... ► continues on page 2
