Comment BY AFRIM KRASNIQI Albania, new and traditional Last week, when the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Fule gave a speech in the Albanian parliament, he encountered another political Albania: parties that listen, politicians who applauded the criticism, officials speaking about reforms and dialogue, MPs confirming the new political climate, and political leaders raising toasts at official banquets while promising to take on board the lessons of past mistakes. That day, the media and the public breathed a sigh of relief: Albania might have a positive chance for an accession invitation. 24 hours later, when political Tirana was “freed” from the pressure and presence of Fule and the EU, we saw another Albania, the traditional one: parties accusing each other, insulting language between the two main political leaders, failed meetings of the electoral and institutional reform committees, ultimatums and defamatory attacks of the highest order! The media and the public could no longer have any doubt: this traditional political face of Albania has been, is and will continue to be a penalty for every major integrating and advancing project for Albania. What happened within 24 hours between the other Albania and the traditional Albania? If one analyses the substance of events, there was nothing extraordinary, simply the parties returned to their personal political calculations. It seems the parties were faced with the dilemma of which is more fruitful: an electoral reform that creates trust and resolves the twenty-year deadlock, or an CEC and an electoral model that keeps/gives power regardless of popular votes? A new head of state who demonstrates maturity, integrity and inclusive institutional conduct, or a loyal notary of... ▶ continues on page 5
