Commentary BY PREC ZOGAJ January 21 and the courtroom According to the Tirana court, there is still no perpetrator for the criminal tampering with the January 21 footage from the prime minister’s office cameras. The only person indicted by the prosecution for interference in the server of this institution, A. Kasaj, as the IT chief at the prime minister’s office, has been declared innocent on the grounds that the room where the server from which the footage was deleted was located was under Guard surveillance and that this was not Kasaj’s office. In addition, the phone cell data showed that at midnight, as January 22 was beginning, when the server was tampered with, Kasaj was at his home near Medrese. In other words, Kasaj was not at the scene of the crime when the crime occurred and had no access to the recording room that was under Guard surveillance. These were his two strong alibis, on the basis of which the court found him innocent. At the “first moment”, the court’s first decision in the January 21 case sparks and clashes with public opinion, the victims’ families, the political opposition and the international factor, which has treated the January 21 killings by Albanian justice as a condition for unblocking the country’s integration process into Europe. The fact that the exposure of the ugliness begins with an acquittal for the most proven element of the accusation sounds like the beginning of a farce, moving toward a trial already unsheathed in the halls of the executive branch. But beware! One must not fall into the trap of prejudice and surprise. The case as a whole must not be confused with the responsibility of the specific individuals accused.
