Commentary BY ARDIAN VEHBIU The marshes of ignorance Yesterday on Shqiptarja.com, Dhurata Hamzai drew attention to the fact that on the official website of the Council of Ministers there is a complete lack of the designation of standard Albanian as the official language of the Republic. Quite rightly. It is enough to take a quick look at that page to understand that even a village teacher, with a two-year pedagogical institute, would have written it better (much better). The information is riddled with inaccuracies and folkloric infection. Already in the second paragraph we read: ‘Greek geographer, Ptolemy- ous, has testified to the existence of Albanians and the Albanian language since the second century AD. It is clear that this refers to Ptolemy of Alexandria, who, in the 2nd century AD, mentions the tribe Albanoi, and their capital Albanopolis. But Ptolemy never spoke anywhere of either Albanians or the Albanian language. As is known (as even an owl knows), Albanians are mentioned for the first time in...’ ► continued on page 22
