Comment BY AFRIM KRASNIQI The U.S. advice and our dilemma Albania is one, but when you listen to politicians, citizens and foreign diplomats, it seems that we are dealing with at least five different Albanias: one that flourishes, grows and prospers (the government), one that groans, sick and poor (the opposition), one disappointed by life and politics, powerless to change and without great hopes for the future (a majority of citizens), one that the coexistence of these visions for the country and its fate is normal for periods of transition and crises of identity and moral values. The problem is that peoples with culture and citizenship have within them strength and individuals who make the difference, and they have the courage to confront the greatest challenges in an effort to do the best for their country. Albania today lacks the active space of this civic elite, which makes the visible difference between great expectations and great disappointments. A retrospective reading helps us create a meaningful balance. Albania until 1990 was the unique country of isolation, poverty, censorship and fear.
