Comment BY AFRIM KRASNIQI The strike that exposes us In the modern Tirana of 2012, very close to the complex of apartments and villas belonging to some of the state’s highest officials, 20 citizens are on the 12th day of a hunger strike. In post-communist Albania, strikes are not headline news in the media and politics, yet in the long history of strikes this latest one carries a special symbolism. These are 20 human lives who together served 600 days of political imprisonment under the communist system. They tried together, now separated into groups, to protest through sacrifice in 1991, 1993, 1995, 1998, 2002, 2004, 2008 and now again in 2012. The years have passed and almost nothing has changed in their lives or in the relationship between their rights and society and the state. Labeled today as former political persecuted people, they are living proof that even after two decades they remain persecuted. Most of them spent their youth in the notorious prison of Qafë Bari; all were regular voters for the right-wing political forces and today, after 22 years of experiments, unfulfilled promises and disappointments, they are once again where they were more than two decades ago, - in the story of life, for the right and... ► continues on page 10
