The General Prosecution is asking the government for 15 million old lek in order to grant, as a financial fund, to the family of the late prosecutor Xhevat Hana, who lost his life on 5 January this year in a hospital in Bergamo, Italy. It is understood that the request by the Prosecution was made immediately after prosecutor Hana’s death, but although two weeks have passed, this financial amount has still not been received by the family, nor by the General Prosecution. A look at the Albanian media
Only 17% of the world’s population live in countries where they enjoy media freedom. In the rest of the world, governments or other non-state actors control the views that reach citizens by silencing independent voices. This is more or less the essence of the 2011-2012 World Press Freedom Report, published by “Reporters Without Borders”.
In the report, the clear negative trend affecting the media in the Balkans is noted. Albania is ranked 96th, one place after the Dominican Republic and one place before Cameroon. Among the Balkan countries, ahead of us are: Bosnia (58), Croatia (68), Serbia (80), Kosovo (86), Macedonia (94), while behind us is only Montenegro in 107th place. Next to Albania there are two arrows (like the two TV channels we are forced to watch in order to balance somewhat the information we receive) which show that the deterioration is greater than 10 places, fully 16 places lower than a year earlier. But what are the reasons that have brought the media to this level? “Reporters Without Borders” clearly states that the use of the media for private and criminal interests, unfair competition in small markets, self-censorship by a large number of underpaid journalists, are tombstones over all the Balkan countries, including Albania. “Justice, with poorly trained staff, allied with the government and often corrupt, seems more interested in attacking the media than in ending impunity for those who threaten or physically attack journalists. This is the case of Montenegro, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina and... continues on page 10
