A small firm in the US presented yesterday in Tirana a mega construction and tourism project, for which the figure goes up to 2 billion dollars. Behind these astronomical figures are shareholders who in the US have enterprises with two workers and modest sales balance sheets. The firm in question is “SIVA Partners”, which presented yesterday at the “Sheraton” a giant project for a tourist resort, where, in addition to golf courses and yacht harbors – already familiar features – it declares that it is ready to build two twin towers of 75 floors each. The project would be realized at the mouth of the Vjosa River, on 505 hectares, in an area protected by the Narta Lagoon, and its value would range from 1.5 to 2 billion dollars. At the center of this project is a super-casino. In other words, the investors from the United States of America claim they will build an Atlantic City on the Adriatic coast at the height of the global crisis, an elite tourism center that would offer space for some of the world’s largest luxury ships and so many seats for the world’s gamblers that it would...

A country without youth
Editorial

A country without youth
Albania is one of the countries with the youngest population. An asset of special value for a country that seeks to make up for lost time quickly, through rapid development with concrete results. The 20-year-olds of 1990 are now parents with children; those born in 1990 are voters and on the verge of university graduation. Unlike older generations, they have had the fortune of knowing life in a newer system; they have enjoyed freedom and boundless space, but along with them all the pains of the transition have also grown and left their mark.
They are growing up in an increasingly technological world, in front of TV screens, computers or modern phones, bombarded with diverse information and different life options. Anyone who wants to go to school, study at university, move around freely – can do so without much effort. So formally, youth in Albania has everything the previous generation did not. Is that enough? Of course not.
Albanian youth deserves to be measured not against the denied youth of the communist system, but against their European peers. If we make this comparison, there are few reasons to be enthusiastic.
Albanian youth deserves to be measured not against the denied youth of the communist system, but against their European peers. If we make this comparison, there are few reasons to be enthusiastic. The younger generation missed the chance to be born in a truly democratic country, to grow up in a competitive environment based on democratic values and standards, to...
