Voting among minors and adults
Voting by 16-year-olds remains to be tested as to what the terrain is like, and the testing is mainly focused on the lives of 16-year-olds so far, from the point of view of their activism in social and political organizations, their experiences so far, and the consistency and implementation of the same issue and strategy for this matter. It must be seen whether they are informed about the right to choose, about their right to vote; it must also be seen whether they are confronted with such phenomena, meaning with the aspects of elections within smaller bodies. The curricula and whether the curricula of pre-university education have enabled them to have a sound formation regarding the meaning of the right to vote, the importance of the right to vote as a political right for them, and the way and procedure for exercising it, must also be examined. These are the aspects that I see remain to be looked at in this framework. But what changes when something is accessible to 18-year-olds, what changes in two years? In practical terms, this may bring small changes because both are young ages. We consider an 18-year-old to be an adult, that is, an 18-year-old has acquired full capacity to work and is considered adult, whereas when we say to involve 16-year-olds in voting processes or in other non-political processes, we must bear in mind that we are still dealing with minors, because that is the legal concept. This is a convention, but it is a legal convention established....
