Comment BY LINDA RAMA Respect work with the vote When Edi asked me whether I wanted to come to a meeting where the people from Tirana would gather, my mind went to the courtyard of my childhood home with its adobe wall, where conversation, under the scent of roses and carnations, celery and mint, amid the colors of snowdrops and violets, beneath plum, apricot and date trees. The women of the house would go around the guests offering them ice-cold water from the well in the porch, rose syrup and wonderful jam made from the petals of the flowers and the fruit of the trees in the yard. Even today that courtyard is with me, and my grandfather and grandmother, or “nona” as we called them, are there, although they have been gone from life for years. Their memory is the best advice for me. I was born here, I grew up here, first learning the wise lessons of home and then those of school; we went through years of hardship, work, joys and sorrows, births and departures. Here, in Tirana, right on the border of another time, Rea and Grego were also born. The other time made Tirana different too. The Tirana where our children grew up was very different from the Tirana where we grew up. Even more different still is the Tirana of the children born today. I would not have come today if I did not see it as a chance to be among Tirana residents who want a Tirana and a country where the civic culture of yards of coexistence does not disappear forever and... ► continued on page 21
