Editorial BY ANILA BASHA Let hashish be legalized Two years ago, when a group of journalists visited Holland, based in The Hague for the matter of the functioning of the International Court there, the tour of visits also included a meeting at the Dutch Ministry of the Interior. Our perception as journalists, and of course the first question that comes to mind, has to do with hashish. That is, Holland is the country where hashish is legalized, but it does not allow significant quantities to be taken outside its borders. Anyone on the balcony of their own home can plant a cannabis plant and consume it there. Or, if they do not do such a thing, for tourists and everyone who visits Amsterdam, they can stop at a coffee shop, smoke a cigarette, and get drawn into the enchanting world that Amsterdam offers. This is a panorama that for most Albanians in the metropolis is familiar. The essence of this somewhat curious presentation is the question we asked the law-enforcement officials: what is the percentage rate of crime in Holland, compared with other countries of the European Union, or even with the United States of America? And as I opened my notes to look at the figures, I noticed that the Dutch official had shown that crime, murders, robberies, etc., are 23 percent lower in Holland than in the USA and other countries. The simple argument: consuming hashish cigarettes made people calmer, more easygoing, away from quarrels and conflicts, and less burdened. The rest of the... Continues on page 11
