ERMELINDA MEKSI The truth and George Orwell While the financial situation is one of the biggest concerns for the sustainability of the Albanian economy, the Ministry of Finance has not published the seven-month fiscal data as required, citing problems in the treasury electronic system. There is still no official deadline for when they will be available. However, in this situation, the acting prime minister stated at the government meeting that: Albanian finances are transparent and the economic situation is solid!!! He took the opportunity to praise the tax and customs administration, which during the month of July managed to collect 7 percent more in taxes, while customs, according to him, collected 16 percent more than in July of last year... But what is the truth of the fiscal data? From data on revenues according to some operational sources from taxes and customs, it can be seen that there is room for praise, because revenues in customs and taxes during the period were not even achieved at the level planned by the units of this system, creating a shortfall against the July plan of 2.3%, or around 6 million dollars. As for the January-July 2013 period, the shortfalls in revenues in taxes and customs show that the shortfalls are high, not only against the plan, but also compared with 2012.
