Comment BY ALTIN KREKA The expulsion of Syrians, an inhumane act The authorities are acting in a wrong way by expelling Syrian refugees, who are appearing in ever greater numbers at the country’s southern borders. At first they could be counted on the fingers of one hand among the clandestines from other countries, who had lost their jobs in Greece and were trying to reach the West. But for several weeks now hundreds have been entering Albania every day. Police in Gjirokastër and Vlorë report cases involving groups of 50 or 70 people, all Syrians, who entered Albania on foot from Greece. Albanian authorities appear to be treating them like economic refugees as well, who, through criminal smuggling routes, enter Albania with the aim of moving on to Montenegro and then further to the countries of the European Union. But with the Syrians left without home or homeland because of the civil war, that is not the issue. In one of the few interviews that were managed with an English-speaking person from the group of Syrian refugees, it was learned that they were simply looking for a safe place, even if that place was Albania. continued on page 16
