The Socialist Party of Albania’s Alternative for Science
TO THE MEMBERS AND SYMPATHIZERS OF THE SOCIALIST PARTY
On 10 June, the Council of Ministers adopted a decision to reform scientific activity in the country.
We think that the time has come, perhaps even past time, for this activity to be subjected to evaluation, completely detached from political influences. This reform is necessary because science, creativity and culture in general, affected by the past, are suffering from ideological distortions that hinder their normal progress. The Socialist Party of Albania seeks to depoliticize science at all its levels, to reform scientific institutions according to contemporary criteria, to encourage free competition of ideas and evaluation on the basis of professional merit. This is the only way for scientific research to break out of dogmatic schemes and be guided by national and social interests.
Science will be valued and supported by the state, but not ideologized. The institutions of the Socialist Party of Albania will take care to create the necessary climate for free academic activity. Scientists themselves must take responsibility for the development of their fields, in contact with contemporary European and world achievements.
The Socialist Party of Albania supports opening institutes and research centers to broad cooperation with universities, scientific institutions and foreign specialists. Albanian science must have the opportunity to benefit from international experience without losing its national identity and without succumbing to provincial complexes. The main criterion must be the quality of scientific work and its real value for the country and society.
Within this framework, the system of financing and administration must also be changed. Public funds for science should be distributed transparently and responsibly, favoring serious projects and concrete results. Scientific institutions can no longer function through bureaucratic orders, undeserved privileges and formal hierarchies that stifle initiative.
This alternative aims to restore the dignity of Albanian science and of the scientist himself. Without free thought and without genuine scientific debate, there can be no democratic, economic or cultural development. The Socialist Party of Albania calls on its members and sympathizers, as well as all intellectuals, to support this new reformist orientation.

The People’s Assembly continued its session yesterday.
