THE AGE OF DEMOCRACY NEEDS WOMEN’S THOUGHT AND ACTION
Today is March 8, the celebration of women, of our mothers and sisters. We have always looked forward to this day with joy. Because the great worries and difficulties we are going through seem to leave little room for joy, but we must not forget it.
March 8 is the day that always radiates the message of humanism, love and respect for half of the population. Today, more than ever, we need humanism, love and respect for one another, and tolerance. Political struggle has brought considerable tension, anxiety, fear and, why not, even hostility into our relations with one another. Women’s Day gives us an opportunity to call for love among people, for love of one another. Mothers are noble because they give birth to and raise human beings. Their love is great, boundless, innate; it expresses the essence of humanity. The difficulties of the transition we are going through—theft, destruction, arson and killings, speculation, rising prices, food insecurity, and painful mass exoduses—have in a way weighed down Albanian women, but they have not weakened them or taken away their hope and joy for the future. The long and recent history of our people is the clearest testimony to the high virtues of Albanian women who, despite suffering, oppression and exhaustion, have never surrendered to these pressures; it bears witness to their noble character and great love, demonstrated in the struggles for our people’s freedom and independence, through their participation in the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War, and through their work after the country’s liberation in every sphere of life. She has always inspired and expressed wisdom and self-restraint, but also courage and bravery, culture and mature thought. She took an active part in calling ... meetings, opening roads and railways ... Drita Kosturi, Zhaneta Ogranjaja and the minute of silence held by those present in honor of Musine Kokalari. Their moving memories are the best message for preventing the imposition of any kind of dictatorship. At this meeting the Kosovar poet Lindita Aliu also made me more aware through her accounts ... FOREIGN DIPLOMATS SHOULD NOT GET INVOLVED IN THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN
(From the meeting at the PS Fier headquarters with Mr. Tomas Melia and Gabriele Diaz)
On March 5, 1992, at their request, the director of the National Democratic Institute’s program, Mr. Tomas Melia, and the well-known popular Spanish deputy (for Granada), Mr. Gabriel Diaz, were received at the PS Fier headquarters. (The Chairman of PS Fier, Petro Koci, informed the gentlemen about the PS’s serious commitment to free and democratic elections and to a fair electoral campaign, in which the peaceful exchange of political forces’ programs should have a place, rather than insults, abuse or undemocratic attitudes.
