We want Fatos Nano CATERING TO THE DICTATORSHIP, TELEVISION MANIPULATIONS CONTINUE ENDLESSLY, VIOLATING EVERY LAW AND MORAL PRINCIPLE PETITION FOR THE RELEASE OF FATOS NANO AND ALL THOSE WHO HAVE PROTESTED AGAINST VIOLATIONS OF HUMAN FREEDOMS AND RIGHTS During the Socialist Party Parliament, the Southern Conference of the Party, and the General Committee of the PDSH, all the concerns raised against violations of human rights and freedoms, violations of the country's constitution and laws, and violations of the right to assemble, meetings, strikes and protests, were once again confirmed. - Considering as wholly untrue the rampant propaganda by the executive, the public television propaganda voice and the media of the Democratic Party that the country is peaceful, the Albanian people are not troubled by the politically motiveless imprisonment of the Secretary General of the Socialist Party, Mr. Fatos Nano, and of other officials, and the violations against human freedoms and rights, we the undersigned citizens consider the situation to be serious. - Considering the arrest of Fatos Nano to be completely unlawful and evaluating it as an act of political persecution in the absence of evidence of his guilt. - Taking into account that the protests against his imprisonment and the violations of human freedoms and rights have spread throughout Albania and recently also in emigration. - Seeing that the government and the media controlled by it continue to remain silent both in the case of the trotyl explosive device against the home of the chairman of the Helsinki Committee, Mr. Vaskë Ndoj, used as an act of intimidation, and in the case of state violence carried out in various cities of the country against protesters. - Seeing that the growing protests against human freedoms and rights, violations against the constitution and laws, violations of the right to assemble, meetings, strikes and protests, continue throughout Albania with well-known protests and also in emigration. - Confirming that, despite pressure, violence and psychological terror, the protests of citizens, activists of the Socialist Party and other strata express popular revolt against this regime. We strongly demand: 1. That Fatos Nano be released at once, immediately and unconditionally. 2. That all persons arrested during peaceful protests be released immediately. 3. That arrests and police violence against protesters stop. 4. That freedoms and human rights, the rights of assembly, strike and protest, be respected. 5. That the deceitful propaganda of state television and media controlled by the authorities come to an end. 6. That political pluralism and the rule of law be guaranteed in Albania. Tirana, 2.08.1993

Yesterday in the town square of Librazhd, hundreds of protesters, especially young people, gathered at a protest rally where they condemned the political arrest of Fatos Nano, the violations of human rights and police violence. Speakers at the rally stressed that Albania cannot go backwards, that pluralism and democracy cannot be replaced by arbitrariness and repression. The protesters demanded the immediate release of Fatos Nano and all those arrested during the protests. Placards and slogans called for respect for the law, the constitution and fundamental freedoms. The rally took place calmly and in an orderly manner.

In conclusion, it is requested that the Constitutional Court annul the prosecutor's decision and order the restoration of constitutional legality.

Today as well, protest rallies against the policy of the Democratic Party, against the violation of human rights, against police violence and repression, will be organized in another number of the country, thus demonstrating the determination not to back down from the arrests of the accomplices.
