The same position was taken in 1977 at a meeting, warning of harsh punishments against political opponents. According to the lawyer, the investigations were carried out hastily, with incomplete documentation and with prejudices that seriously violate the right of defense. He emphasizes that the case file was built with a clear political aim and that the changes in the charges along the way show an effort to adapt the case to the party order. In this sense, according to him, the case against Fatos Nano is not a standard criminal case, but a trial of political character. After this decision was communicated, he was sent for the first time to unit 313, and later to Bënça prison. The lawyer stresses that no evidence presented so far justifies the aggravation of the charge and that the defense will seek to have it dismissed entirely. In conclusion, he states that public opinion and the institutions should follow this trial closely, because it is here that not only the fate of an individual is at stake, but also the standard of the rule of law in Albania.
