At 12:20 p.m. the first hearing in the case against the accused Fatos Nano, deputy and vice-chairman of the Socialist Party, was opened. The many foreign and Albanian observers seated inside the courtroom followed with interest what would emerge from the first session. This time, the decision on the end of the accusation fell to Xhelal [?] of the session, seriously spoiling this opening. At 6:16 p.m. the session was suspended and the trial panel announced that it would resume on Monday at 8:30 a.m. Nano called the trial legally baseless and described it as part of a political scenario. He stated that the accusations against him had previously been voiced at rallies and in speeches by Democratic Party leaders and that the prosecution had only given them legal terms. There were applause, reactions and frequent interruptions in the room. The presence of diplomatic observers and many supporters was noted. Outside the room, the atmosphere was tense. Why the deputy Fatos Nano presented his defense will not be left with the file - After the parliamentary session ended, it was requested, as far as I could tell. I don't know that, but yesterday... Nano came out for... In any case, only. The defense lawyer, S. Hoxha, said that the defense had not received all the case materials in time and that this hindered its preparation. According to him, respect for procedures was an essential condition for a fair trial. He requested that the session be postponed until the defense had fully familiarized itself with the file. But the trial panel decided to continue the process. After the session, opposition supporters commented that this was another indication of a lack of impartiality.

“This injustice will be corrected soon,” we expect a court process...

Statement by Fatos Nano in the courtroom Mr. Chairman. Mr. Chairman, We declare our position. After yesterday's session, you told the public that the prosecution had fulfilled its duty. I maintain that this trial has no legal basis whatsoever and is entirely politically motivated. Everything that is happening is part of a carefully thought-out scenario. Today, before you, I declare that I am not afraid of the truth and that justice will triumph. Citizens will understand that this is an attack on the opposition and on pluralism. I call on everyone following this process to remain calm and to keep faith in the democratic future of the country. Thank you.
