Berisha wants to enter Europe with the Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini

A sad gloom, a great pain could be felt like a spirit among the hundreds and hundreds of residents of Vorë who had come to this meeting. They felt bad about the referendum, when they remembered the consequences of the exodus for the country. Astonished, servility, a feeling of insecurity, unnatural for the character of Albanians, made them silent, though with shaken hearts and worried faces. Some of them painfully recalled the time when they had worked the land and become masters of that soil, and then gave it up when Law 7501 came out. Somewhere the voice of a citizen was heard: “Why don’t you ask them whether the money from Sudja and the 6 percent scheme has been returned to them? Why don’t you ask them why they are taking our property away from us every day?” The meeting took place in a heavy atmosphere. Police officers and civilians were visible everywhere. There were also the usual “observers,” people from the secret services. Thousands of eyes sought to make out Professor Servet Pëllumbi’s face in the crowd. When he arrived, applause burst out like a release. The residents of Vorë welcomed him with respect and warmth. The PD controls the people. Illegal bosses, the work and peace of citizens are being violated. It is throwing the order upside down, keeping class hatred alive; instead of democracy it seeks to impose the Middle Ages and terror. Its power is leading the country to economic ruin, unemployment, poverty and the loss of human dignity. The people can no longer endure this situation. The continuation of our life in this way is unacceptable. Vorë, like all of Albania, is feeling on its back the terror, injustice and insecurity. Those who govern today have lost contact with the people. That is why they seek to hold on to power through fear, with police and SHIK. (Continued on page 7)

WHERE ARE WE AND WHERE SHOULD WE BE? ...

Novemberizes WHERE ARE WE AND WHERE SHOULD WE BE? ... - Childish manipulations by Selami in comparing the present with the past - The PD presented to the people: a state under the rule of law, work and prosperity, honesty and a clear road to Europe, civilized emancipation, exaggerated propagandistic promises, and the one who gave them so much sympathy and applause does not feel and will not stop regretting the lost times, the country ruled by a handful of traders and peasants, the disregard for freedoms, the loss of faith and of perspective. Others rise up and say that Selami and his people are leading the people to a choice between hunger and fear. For years their propaganda has tried to justify failures by blaming the past. But the ordinary person, who lives by wages and sweat, is no longer persuaded by words. He sees that prices are rising, unemployment is growing, property remains insecure, and the state does not protect the citizen. Instead of a state under the rule of law, we have a state of fear and privileges. The childish comparisons made with the past do not solve today’s wounds. People want bread, work, peace and dignity. They do not want new lies. They do not want to hear every day that the fault lies elsewhere. What is needed is responsibility and real change. Continued on page 6

Socialist Party rally in Gjirokastër

Hundreds and hundreds of citizens of Gjirokastër took part in this gathering, where local PS leaders and opposition representatives spoke. In the speech delivered, it was said that official propaganda presents the referendum as a simple technical act, while in reality it affects the future of the country, the balance of powers and the freedoms of citizens. The presence of the civilian police and SHIK people was denounced; according to the speakers, they were trying to intimidate participants and control the meeting. The speakers called on citizens to vote “No,” describing the draft constitution as one-sided and dangerous for democracy. They urged the people of Gjirokastër not to fall prey to pressure and threats. TIJANAS BINO (Continued on page 3)
