Interview with Prof. Rexhep Qosja If the Albanian political parties had behaved differently, if they had not locked the national movement in offices, then Serbia would certainly not have so easily thought of acting as it did from Krajina to Kosovo. In other words, the political parties have not prevented the problem that has now emerged in time, and even now they are not ready, except with office talk, to influence more strongly the prevention of this new problem. A day of celebration, but also of responsibility

Tomorrow, the new school year Tomorrow the new school year begins. Around 700,000 preschool, eight-year and secondary school pupils will leave games and holidays, household chores, and sit at their desks at school. Thus begins the new and annual marathon of knowledge. This is a marked day for all Albanians. Ever since the first Albanian school was opened, this day has become a day of celebration for parents and children, for society as a whole. Albanians won the right to education with blood. The rifle and the primer were companions of the fighters of our National Renaissance. Honor to all the martyrs of the Albanian school! During the years of the communist dictatorship, the great spirit of the Albanian people made it possible to build a broad educational system with scientific ambition. Despite the ideological distortions and the excessive burden of programs with unnecessary subjects and disciplines, in that period the school managed to lift the country out of total illiteracy and prepare young generations with broad culture and a high scientific level, worthy of competing with the schools of the most advanced countries. Honor and gratitude to all those teachers who devoted their lives to the teaching and education of the younger generations. The years of democracy opened other horizons for the Albanian school. New possibilities were created to enrich its content with cultural and scientific knowledge in line with the new needs of society. Greater possibilities were opened for cooperation and integration of our school with the educational systems of developed countries. The school was freed from ideological dogmas and unnecessary overload. The reform and restructuring of the school in line with the new needs of society over these last 4 years has been carried out through the effort and dedication of qualified scientific forces in the field of education. Thus it became possible to draft hundreds of new programs and texts of (continued on page 4)

The 21st Congress of the Socialist Youth International continues its work

Italy The 21st Congress of the Socialist Youth International continues its work - The Eurosocialist Monika Kryemadhi is elected vice president of the Socialist Youth International Since 17 September 1995, the 21st Congress of the Socialist Youth International has been continuing its work in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Also taking part in this congress are high-ranking figures of the Socialist International: Luiz Ajala, Secretary General of the Socialist International; Gusenbaur, vice president of the Socialist International; Vollen, secretary general of the Socialist Party of the European Community. The congress was opened by Massimo D'Alema, chairman of Italy's PDS. A delegation from FRESSH also takes part in the congress, led by Ilir Meta, chairman of FRESSH and deputy chairman of PSSH. Members of the delegation are also Erjon Braçe, Monika Kryemadhi and Gjergj Koja, respectively vice chairman of FRESSH, secretary general and secretary for foreign relations. Yesterday, voting was held for the highest body of the Socialist Youth International, the Presidium of this forum. Monika Kryemadhi, the representative of FRESSH, was elected a member of the Presidium and vice president of the International. Of the seven members of the Presidium representing Europe, one is Monika Kryemadhi, who will be responsible for Eastern and Central Europe. This election caused a great deal of emotion and enthusiasm among the members of the FRESSH delegation, who regard it as recognition of the Eurosocialist Youth Forum of Albania. The congress continues its work successfully. Ilir Meta, chairman of FRESSH and deputy chairman of PSSH, has held numerous meetings with leaders of the Socialist Youth International and socialist parties, which we will introduce to you in future issues. Monika Kryemadhi She is 21 years old, a student at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, one of the founders of FRESSH in the city of Tirana and in Albania. At the founding meetings on 15 January 1992, she was elected to the Presidency of FRESSH. At the First and Second Congresses she was elected Secretary General of the Eurosocialist Forum. Monika Kryemadhi is chairwoman of the Eurosocialist Forum of Tirana and a member of the Presidency of the Executive Committee of the Socialist Party of the Capital. She is also a member of the General Executive Committee of PSSH.
