Interview with Dritero Agolli

I have a sharp pen and a clear mind The so-called anti-genocide law opened up new paths for me in the realm of creativity. I want to write a series of articles about the new characteristics of the new totalitarianism and of micro-dictators, about the degeneration of their morality and political culture, illustrating them with concrete facts and real episodes. Among these writings I will try to uncover the faces of our politicians down to their gradual degeneration. Pages 2-3

The broken shackles of the demodictatorship It was 2:45 p.m. on July 7 when R. Alia, the first president of pluralist Albania, was released from his shackles. At 12:00 that day, the Court of Appeal had granted him freedom. Is this how the cycle of punishment for the bloc leaders ends, after the sensational trials against them, trials that were not without reason described as "much ado about nothing"? What remains doubtful is everything that was done to punish them. The special articles that penalized them are today scarcely remembered by anyone, but we all recall that in those trials much was said about coffee, clothes, and trips abroad. Unlike what was stated in the paragraphs of the law, public opinion asked: Was this the punishment of a political class that left the stage of rule after nearly 50 years? When one thinks that some of them had made a name for themselves as fighters for the liberation of the homeland, seeing them in handcuffs produced at the very least a feeling of pity. Apparently, so does the profession: history never forgets to punish. The punishment of genocide is justified if the crimes belonging to the communist period fall under the provisions of the Criminal Code that punish genocide. But this justification takes on its most distorted meaning when, through a special law, an attempt is made to penalize and condemn a part of the new Albanian political class, and only opposition politicians, the most active ones, for the sole reason that they today represent the most serious threat to Berisha's regime. Sali Berisha, the president who succeeded Albania's «last dictator or first democrat», R. Alia, copied from the latter the well-known phrase: "Co-culprits and co-sufferers." In practice, he is using his rule not to fight, by name, those who have committed crimes, but to criminalize the political figures of the opposition for today's power struggles. Thus, although Fatos Nano is in prison, Berisha's power fears his personality, but even more it fears his party coming to power. The attempts being made to present the Socialist opposition as the bearer of genocide (continued on page 4)

At the Congress of the Independent Miners' Unions of Albania:

Gëzim Kalaja, a “mechanism” of the PD One can only imagine the enthusiasm that the delegates conveyed at their congress, the “Independent Miners' Union of Albania,” led by Mr. Gëzim Kalaja. It reached its peak when union leader Kalaja proclaimed the heroism of his union in the struggle against communism, which, as is known, includes the destruction of mines, factories and the smelting of various minerals, etc. He then showered praise on the Meksi Government, never forgetting the PD and President Berisha. From well-informed sources it is learned that in the report delivered by Kalaja to the miners' unionists, successes were highlighted that had been materialized in thousands of tons of coal, iron, steel, nickel, copper and the entire planned output; meanwhile Gëzim called on former miners who had abandoned their work to return to work in the same way as the PD, which, just as it has fulfilled every promise made to the people, will return them to their previous condition. Some delegate in the hall, upon hearing Kalaja's nonsense, left in protest. In the name of the Party (PD), the first to be greeted was its deputy chairman (since Tritan is not in Albania), Mr. Tomorr Dosti. "Forward to win the 1996 elections," shouted Mr. Tomorr at the end of his speech, and the hall responded with chants, just as three years earlier, "Freedom - Democracy." Today, the congress of the “Independent Miners” is said to conclude its work “together, as Gëzimi tells us, while Gëzimi applies the lessons.” D.P.
