At its meeting of 4 December, the Presidium of the Socialist Party analyzed the latest political developments in the country and discussed at length the best way to organize the party's work at all levels. All the recent actions of the Democratic Party, the new maneuvers against the chairman of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, the obstacles and police terror against opposition activities, the dollar fever to raise as much money as possible from the campaign in the diaspora and from domestic smuggling, the law on the control of opposition politicians by the government commission, the secret preparations to change the electoral law, all this clearly shows that the Democratic Party is preparing to carry out an abnormal and anti-democratic electoral campaign. It is this deep political crisis and the illusions that the Democratic Party conveys that are the basic factor forcing it to undertake such unconstitutional actions that lead to the violation of human rights and the political freedoms of the opposition, to the adoption of legal and organizational forms typical of a totalitarian state, to the delegation of the people's electoral right to a seven-member government commission, to the closing of the files of those who served the dictatorship in a more filthy and amoral way than spying. All this shows that the Democratic Party has lost much of the confidence it once enjoyed, so much so that disappointment among many people has turned into outright disgust. It is rotten with corruption, gnawed by political clans, caudillo-style networks and competition among economic groups within it, and its institutional and administrative structures are blocked and nonfunctional. Despite the propaganda, the leaders of the Democratic Party know reality well, realities that every day confirm defeat more and more. This has even been confirmed by the studies, tests or consultations carried out by the polls in luxury hotels. The Democratic Party's only political weapon is the obsolete fight against communist windmills. Meanwhile, the most effective political weapon for the Socialist Party is the building of an open, truly democratic society, with an effective reform of the economy and the market, with free initiatives and social solidarity. Nothing can prevent the Socialist Party and the other opposition forces from winning the next elections. It is moving toward these elections with increased confidence, having learned from the Democratic Party (Continues on page 2)
