Albania needs to establish a democratic order in which human rights are fully respected.

Summary by the Voice of America of the report by the Human Right Watch Group on Albania Political trials, mass-media campaigns, and police violence have been used against members of the opposition and against anyone else who has expressed views different from those of the state. Of particular concern is state interference in the independence of the judicial authorities. Freedom of the press remains a serious concern also for 1995. Another human-rights issue has been the brutal intervention of the police against members of the political opposition. In addition, there is abundant evidence of ill-treatment of detained persons. Socialist deputies console the families of the victims who drowned at sea

The day before yesterday, the chairman of the socialist group Namik Dokle and the deputies Ethem Ruka and Bardhyl Agasi went to the town of Rrogozhina and to the villages of Hamzraj and Gosë e Vogël in the Kavajë district to console the families of the victims who drowned at sea while on the way to emigrate to Italy. “We came to be by your side in this great pain you are going through,” said the socialist deputies. “The sea seized the lives of your sons, but it was hardship and unemployment that led them toward death.” The families of the victims thanked the deputies, especially in the context of television and government silence regarding this bitter event.
